Mrs. Denise Davies

Mrs Denise Davies

I took up the sport of archery in 1970 and in the same year helped to form Cardiff Nalgo archery club with some financial help from Cardiff City Council. Some years later the club was renamed Castle Bowmen. I held the position of secretary in the club for many years till I retired in 2004. I also organised the coaching in the club from 1980 to 2004.

With the help of my husband we organised and ran the annual Castle Bowmen Record Status FITA shoot from 1982 to 2004.

In 2005 my husband and I formed our present club Celyn Archers. I am the secretary and also coach the intermediate and advanced archers in the club.

I have held various positions on the County and Regional Committees: Glamorgan County Coaching Officer and ran the County Squad for a few years.  Records Officer for the South Wales Archery Society prior to becoming the Welsh Archery Association (WAA) and later Records Officer for the WAA.

In 1974 I qualified as a Master Bowman and in 1975 was invited to attend the British Masters Tournament.

In 1976 I qualified for the British Team to compete in the European Championships in Denmark.

I held Master Bowman classification from 1974 to 1995. During this time I also held Grand Master Bowman classification for seven consecutive years.

British Champion in 1984.  Highest Record Status Hereford round shot-1180 in 1988.  Highest FITA Star round shot-1253 in 1990.

I qualified as a County Coach in 1986 and coach archers to Master Bowman standard and above. Since 1984 I have held annual coaching clinics for archers of all abilities and disciplines. I also give private tuition in my club.

I organised and ran the Welsh Senior Squad for two years and the first Welsh Youth Squad in 2007 and 2008.

In 2010 I attended a ten week course at Cardiff University and qualified as a Mentor.

In the last two years with the help of my husband a level 2 coach I have organised and run a number of workshops for coaches and archers to improve their knowledge of archery and coaching.

I still enjoy shooting both the recurve and compound bows and when time permits participating in tournaments.

I am a retired civil engineer.  My other interests are fencing, art and calculus.
